On Monday morning, 12 October 2026, Batam went dark. Production lines stopped, traffic lights failed, taps ran dry, mobile signal dropped in and out, and queues stretched out of fuel stations. In parts of the city, power did not return for more than 15 hours.
This article sums up the Batam blackout from official sources, sets the record straight on the 3-day outage rumour circulating on WhatsApp, and gives five steps to keep your business running the next time the power goes out.
The Batam blackout in numbers
| Item | Fact |
|---|---|
| Started | Monday, 12 October 2026, around 06:30 WIB |
| Areas affected | Most of Batam, plus Bintan and Tanjungpinang (one interconnected grid) |
| Customers affected | 411,219 customers, a load of about 501.8 MW |
| Restoration | 98.8% of customers back on by early Tuesday (13/10); about 5,100 still waiting |
| Suspected cause | A wild animal entering the Sungai Harapan substation, still under PLN investigation |
What happened
The fault hit Batam's power system at around 06:30 WIB. Because Batam, Bintan, and Tanjungpinang share one interconnected grid, the outage spread to all three at once. PLN Batam restored supply in stages, giving priority to hospitals, the airport, ports, and public facilities.
Many areas came back on Monday night, around 21:20 WIB. By early Tuesday (13/10), PLN reported 98.8% of customers restored, with one feeder still under repair. On Tuesday morning, however, power was reported to drop out again briefly in several areas. Supply is not fully stable yet.
The impact reached the factory floor
One grid failure stopped many sectors at once:
- Industry: several factories halted production and sent workers home. Companies without a generator could not carry on at all.
- Water: water distribution stopped because treatment plant pumps need electricity, and it had not returned to normal even after power came back.
- Traffic and fuel: traffic lights went out at many junctions, and long queues formed at fuel stations.
- Communications and payments: mobile signal was patchy, and QRIS, e-wallets, and debit cards failed in some shops.
- Public services: waiting areas at Hang Nadim Airport went dark, and the Batam Mayor's Office ran on a generator.
The offices, shops and factories that kept working that day ran on a backup power source.
Fact check: will Batam's power be off for 3 days?
No. PLN Batam has denied the chain message claiming a planned outage from 12 to 14 October 2026 with power on for only 6 hours a day. The company says it never announced a three-day planned outage.
A claim linking the power recovery to a broken Singapore–Batam undersea internet cable was also declared unrelated. Official updates are only on Instagram @ptplnbatam, the PT PLN Batam Facebook page, and the contact centre on 0778 5702 123.
The 3-day rumour is false, but further disruptions are still possible while the grid recovers. If your business can't stop, prepare a backup now.
Compensation from PLN Batam
Customers are entitled to compensation when an outage exceeds the service standard (TMP). Regular customers receive 10% of their monthly fixed charge (Riau Islands Governor Regulation No. 22/2017), while customers with special service agreements receive 15–25% under their contract. It is deducted automatically from the next bill.
For a factory or cold store, that compensation is far smaller than a day of lost production.
5 steps to prepare a backup generator
1. Decide which loads must stay on
You do not need to power the whole building. List only the critical loads, such as main production machines, cold storage, servers and network equipment, water pumps, and emergency lighting. Add up their power in kW.
2. Work out the generator size (kVA)
Divide the total kW by 0.8 to get kVA, then add headroom for the surge when the largest motor starts. Aim for the generator to run at 70–80% of its capacity. The full method is in our generator sizing guide.
| Need | Capacity range | Available AKSA units |
|---|---|---|
| Shophouse, shop, small office | 22–25 kVA | APD22C 22 kVA, APD25BD 25 kVA |
| Office, clinic, small warehouse | 66–110 kVA | APD66C 66 kVA, APD110C 110 kVA |
| Factory, workshop, cold storage | 165–310 kVA | APD165BD 165 kVA, APD220C 220 kVA, APD310C 310 kVA |
| Large plant, shipyard, building | 475–1,100 kVA | APD475C 475 kVA, AC550K 550 kVA, AC1100K 1,100 kVA |
3. Stock up on diesel
As a rough guide, a diesel generator burns 0.25–0.3 litres per kWh. A 110 kVA generator carrying about 60 kW uses roughly 15–18 litres an hour. For a 15-hour outage like this one, plan for about 225–270 litres. Fuel stations queue up during a blackout too, so have the fuel on site before the power goes.
4. Connect it safely
Never connect a generator directly to wiring that is still connected to the PLN grid. Use a changeover switch or ATS so generator power cannot feed back into the grid and endanger PLN crews working on the lines. Have a qualified electrician handle the connection.
5. Protect equipment from on-off power
Repeated drop-outs like Tuesday morning's can damage motors, compressors, and electronics. Switch off large equipment when the power fails, bring it back in stages once supply is stable, and put servers and computers on a UPS so they never shut down abruptly.
Rent or buy a generator?
- Renting suits short-term needs: backup while supply is unstable, events, or projects with a set duration. There is no large upfront cost and no long-term maintenance to manage.
- Buying makes sense when backup power is a permanent need, such as a factory with processes that cannot stop, a hospital, or a data centre.
For generator rental in Batam, PT Citra Lautan Biru is an authorised AKSA generator distributor. We rent and sell 22–1,100 kVA generators by the day, week, or month, with or without an operator, and deliver anywhere on Batam island, from Batu Ampar, Kabil, and Muka Kuning to Tanjung Uncang.
